Icann Changes the Domain Name Game; How About HamiltonRentals.awesome?

The breadth of domain names is about to get incredibly more diverse after the recent decision by Internet naming board Icann to allow a lot more domain suffixes than .com and regional domains like our .co.uk.

So, we can become hamiltonrentals.awesomeITrenting, or how about hamiltonrentals.fabtechprovider. Pretty neat.

While you’ll likely not see those actually come to be, but you will start seeing varied suffixes beginning in late 2012 that are categorized by subjects including industry, geography and ethnicity—including Arabic, Chinese and other scripts, according to the Guardian.

“Today’s decision will usher in a new Internet age,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of ICANN’s board of directors.  “We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration.  Unless there is a good reason to restrain it, innovation should be allowed to run free.”

One drawback from critics has been the possibility of utter confusion among consumers and the opportunity for phishing websites to take advantage of it by creating similar domain names and scripts to mimic those of their legitimate counterparts.

Companies also will have to meet an obvious need to put an increased emphasis on the amount of consideration that goes into selecting the name that will reflect their business.

This move was made out of an increasing necessity for a larger number of global, top-level domains, also known as gTLDs as a result of the growing number of languages on the Web, as well as the move toward IPv6, that the Guardian defines as “a new numbering system for Internet addresses that enormously expands the number of devices that can be connected directly to the net.”

So don’t be mistaken, this decision was not made on a whim, but has undergone more than seven revisions over years of contemplation and debate.

Until the largest Web decision made since the .com move 26 years ago goes into affect, rest assured in the familiarity of our own website, hamiltonrentals.co.uk, were you can find all of your business’ IT rental solutions.
