Oracle Reveals its Latest Version of VM Server for SPARC

Today Oracle has announced its latest innovation in its SPARC line—the Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.1.

The company said the latest edition is a key component in its complete, integrated desktop to datacenter virtualisation portfolio, providing organisations with increased flexibility and improved server utilisation.

Oracle’s VM Server for SPARC is pre-installed on servers from its T-series line, providing a virtualisation solution allowing up to 128 virtual machines, or “domains” on one system.  The VM Server for SPARC 2.1 will deliver live migration capabilities to the SPARC T-series family, including SPARC  T3, UltraSPARC T2 Plus and UltraSPARC T2 based servers ideal for enterprise entities seeking quick and easy migration for running domains from one physical server to another.  This functionality will ultimately eliminate application outages and server downtime.

The company assures the recent enhancements to domain migration and resource management will allow Oracle SPARC T-series users to benefit from increased application service levels. The Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.1 will deliver live migration, allowing users to migrate an active domain to other hosted machines without losing application services for its users. The upgrade further provides secure, encrypted migration with on-chip cryptographic accelerators that require no addition hardware investments.

An increased maximum number of virtual networks per domain will permit a substantial increase in external access, while dynamic resource management (DRM) will make sure domains are running the most important workloads for CPU access.

Users can also look forward to lower-overhead, higher scalability networking for Oracle Solaris 11 Express as well as support for virtual device service validation.

“Oracle VM Server for SPARC demonstrates the tremendous benefits of hardware and software engineered to work together,” said Bill Nesheim, vice president Oracle Solaris Engineering, Oracle. “This release offers customers a new level of flexibility in efficiently deploying enterprise workloads on the SPARC T-series family of systems and demonstrates Oracle’s ongoing commitment to innovation in SPARC and Oracle Solaris. Oracle VM Server for SPARC, the SPARC T-series family of systems, and Oracle Solaris, together with the lifecycle management capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center, offer an unmatched foundation for deploying a wide range of enterprise applications.”

Companies interested in the server line who don’t want to make the final commitment to purchasing the servers outright can come to Hamilton Rentals, who offers the largest server rental fleet in the world.  Hamilton offers the SPARC T-series among other models from Oracle and server industry leaders to suit the needs of organizations of various sizes.
